Africa University students as hosted by Mayor Pro-Tem Carrie Marshall visited with 5th grade elementary students at Floyd Elementary and toured various city facilities on May 5, 2008. Mayor Ed Grant and the entire city council proclaimed May 5 as Africa University Day in Balch Springs. Council Woman Donna Taulbee, Mayor Pro-Tem Marshall and Interim City Manager William McDonald greeted the students Takunda Mayo and Nyasha Clingombe at the council chambers and hosted a reception for several other students and Senior Citizen representatives at the Civic Center. The students are part of a choir from the University visiting Texas as part of the United Methodist Church program and performed locally at the St. Luke Community United Methodist Church. Principal Kim Broadway and staff at Floyd Elementary along with their students are to be commended for the Texas Hospitality received by the students from Africa who performed one of their native songs in their language. Africa University accepts students from throughout the continent of Africa and is building a medical school to meet the healthcare training needs of Africa. The University is located in the city of Mutare in the country of Zimbabwe. |
