[ARCHIVED] Balch Springs City Council Extends Local Deceleration Of Disaster

City Hall

The City Council of Balch Springs, Texas voted unanimously to extend Mayor Steve Gorwood’s Declaration of Disaster to April 27, 2020.  The action came during the City Council’s meeting on March 23 and was required by state law in order to continue the Mayor’s original Declaration.  The City of Balch Springs is working with Dallas County to respond to the unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic created by the COVID-19 virus.  To slow the spread of this virus, the Governor and the County Judge have ordered the closure of gyms, bars, and restaurants, except for takeout and delivery.  In addition, the County has issued a Shelter-In-Place order except for essential services.

Maintaining the Declaration of Disaster for Balch Springs will position the City to ask for reimbursement of expenses for responding to this Public Health Disaster from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Balch Springs Emergency Management Coordinator Brad Harris said the City is very focused on keeping Balch Springs residents safe and providing necessary services.  Mayor Gorwood has stated that he is keeping close contact with Mr. Harris and other City staff and is ready to respond to this rapidly changing situation.  .  Before April 27, the City Council will assess the continuing need for the Declaration to stay in place.
